33% More Fuel Efficient

100% AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION - Sierra Hybrid is the first two-mode hybrid in a full-size pickup, an accomplishment unmatched by the competition. It takes the best of both gas and electric propulsion to provide you with the most efficient power in a given driving situation. The result is a 33 percent increase in EPA -estimated city fuel economy compared to our most efficient gasoline-only Sierra. Better yet, this technology does not sacrifice capability. Sierra Hybrid can handle over 1500 lbs of payload, and offers up to 6100 lbs of conventional trailering capacity.
For maximum fuel economy when you don’t need extra power, AFM can deactivate four of the engine’s eight cylinders. As the load and your demands increase, the cylinders can reactivate within as little as 20 milliseconds to give you maximum power for trailering and passing.
Variable Valve Timing
The heart of Sierra Hybrid is the 6.0L V-8 VVT that produces 332 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque. The secret to this engine’s balanced power is variable valve timing. This feature helps the engine produce near-peak levels of torque across a wide RPM range. This gives you both responsiveness in city driving and bold acceleration for passing and trailering.
At low speeds and light loads, Sierra Hybrid can reduce fuel consumption by shutting off the engine and operating on electric power alone. It can also run on engine power alone, or a combination of both gas and electric. In the city, this technology offers an EPA -estimated 20 mpg.
At highway speeds, Sierra uses its 6.0L V-8 VVT engine in either V-4 or V-8 operation—sometimes with an extra boost of electric power—as conditions warrant. Full V-8 power is available for trailer towing, passing or pulling on a long, steep grade. On the highway, Sierra Hybrid has an EPA -estimated 23 mpg.
Regenerative Braking
During normal stops, regenerative braking uses the motors in the hybrid transmission as generators to decelerate the vehicle by applying resistance in the motors rather than brake friction. At the same time, the motors are capturing that energy as electricity in the 300-volt battery pack, electricity that is available for the next acceleration cycle.
To give your electric drive system ample power without sacrificing capacity, Sierra Hybrid has a 300-volt battery pack built with Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology. It tucks under the rear seat area, out of the way, so your passenger capacity and cargo space are unchanged from other Sierras.
